ONE STEP HAND TECHNIQUES

All One-Step Hand techniques begin with the attacker (Um) stepping back into chungul jase ha dan maki, then stepping forward with chungul jase chung dan kong kyuk. All techniques begin with the defender (Yang) in junbi jase, and all movements as written begin from there. All techniques are written with Um attacking with the right fist.

All techniques, once learned, should be practiced from both sides.

One may practice the techniques solo, performing as Yang, executing each technique in sequence from the right, and then each technique in sequence from the left. In this manner, the il soo sik dae ryun may be practiced as a kind of hyung.

1.      MIDDLE PUNCH. Yang steps forward at 45 deg in kima jase, blocking the punch with left soo do maki and simultaneously countering with right sang dan kong kyuk to the jaw or temple.

2.      FAKE-MIDDLE PUNCH. Before Um can even step forward, Yang feints with right chung dan kong kyuk while still in chunbi. Then as Um punches, Yang executes the exact move as in #1.

3.      ELBOW. Yang steps forward into kima jase to block with right soo do maki, then counters with right pal koop kong kyuk.

4.      ELBOW-SPINNING ELBOW. Performed as in #3, and then Yang twists into left reverse pal koop kong kyuk to the solar plexus.

5.      KNIFE HAND. Yang steps forward into kima jase to block with right soo do maki, and follows up immediately with right soo do to the side of Um's neck.

6.      TRIPLE PUNCH. Yang moves to the outside of the punch by stepping to the left, into kima jase, and parrying with left soo do maki directed just above Um's right elbow. He then counters with right right tro chung dan kong kyuk to the rib cage, pivoting into left chungul jase. Yang pivots to right chungul jase and executes left tro chung dan kong kyuk. He pivots a final time, into left chungul jase, and executes right tro sang dan kong kyuk, directed at a point beyond the other side of Um's head (a killing blow).

7.      REVERSE KNIFE-HAND. This one-step is performed exactly as in #1 except that, instead of a punch, Yang executes a reverse right soo do (palm up), striking just beneath Um's mandible simultaneous with his left hand soo do maki to the to punch.

8.      REVERSE ELBOW. Yang steps back with his right foot into left chungul jase, simultaneously executing left aniso-pakuro soo do maki to the inside of Um's punch. The block flows quickly into a control of Um's wrist, and Yang pulls Um forward into right tro pal koop kong kyuk to the head.

9.      ELBOW-BACK FIST-GROIN HAMMER. Yang steps straight forward into kima jase, executing right soo do maki to Um's punch. As in #3, he follows with right pal koop kong kyuk to Um's solar plexus, and immediately follows with right cap kwon kong kyuk to the face, followed by right cap kwon kong kyuk to the groin.

10.  BLOCK-SWEEP-PUNCH. Yang steps 45 deg to the left, making left chungul jase, simultaneously blocking to the outside of Um's punch with right tro aniso-pakuro soo do maki. Yang now pivots into right chungul, simultaneously engaging Um's right arm just above the elbow. Yang brings his left foot up, and swings it around Um's right leg, so that Yang ends up back in right chungul. Then, in a movement exactly analagous to ikkyou, Yang uses his left hand to push Um's right elbow up and forward, toward Um's ear. As Yang presses down on Um's elbow, he levers the dorsum of Um's right wrist against his (Yang's) right thigh. This permits Yang to release Um's wrist with his right hand and dispatch him with a right kong kyuk to the head.

11.  KNEE-CHEST. Yang steps back with his right leg into left chungul as he executes aniso-pakuro soo do maki to the inside of Um's right wrist. With both hands he forcefully grasps Um's shoulders and pulls Um forward into a right tro moo roop ki to the chest.

12.  KNEE-FACE. Same as #11, except Yang grasps Um's head and pulls his face into right tro moo roop ki.

13.  SPINNING KNIFE-HAND. Yang steps straight forward into right soo do maki to the inside of Um's attacking wrist. Yang immediately pivots into a deep cross-legged stance and turns to look over his left shoulder. With target in sight, he delivers a left soo do strike to the side of Um's neck.

14.  SIDE THROW. Yang steps to his left at a very slight angle off center, deep to the outside of Um's line of attack, into left kima jase. Simultaneously, he delivers a left soo do maki to the outside of Um's right wrist. With his right hand, he reaches over to grasp Um's left shoulder, and spin him around and to Yang's right. At the same time, Yang should deliver a right stomp kick to the back of Um's forward (right) knee, causing him to fall on his back. Yang may then dispatch Um with a kick or punch. Note than in this technique Yang pulls Um to the inside.

15.  BACK THROW. Yang begins as in #14, but instead grabs a large fistful of Um's hair. He may then pull Um either to the inside or the outside by delivering a stomp to the back of Um's knee.

16.  BLOCK-ELBOW. Begins like #6, with kima jase-right soo do maki to a point just barely above Um's right elbow. He then pivots into left chungul jase and delivers right tro pal koop kong kyuk to Um's ribs.

17.  BLOCK-DOUBLE-ELBOW. As in #16. Yang follows the first elbow strike by reversing the path of his arm and striking with another right pal koop kong kyuk, to Um's posterior ribs.

18.  FINGER STRIKE. Begins exactly like #8, but instead of pal koop, Yang pulls Um into a finger strike (ei ji kwan soo)  to Um's eyes or throat.

19.  PALM STRIKE. Yang steps directly forward to deliver a left sang dan maki from left chungul jase. He steps forward into right chungul, planting his foot so that right leg is directly in front of Um's right leg. At the same time, he delivers jang kwo kong kyuk to Um's chin.

20.  HIGH BLOCK-THROW. Yang steps directly forward to deliver a left sang dan maki from left chungul jase. He quickly follows up with right tro pal koop kong kyuk to Um's solar plexus. The right arm flows to the rear and upward, behind Um's shoulder, so that the right palm may cover the back of the left wrist (still held high in sang dan maki) and reinforce the left arm. As Yang steps forward into right chungul jase with his right leg behind Um's right leg, he brings his elbows together, locking Um's arm and permitting Yang to throw him.

21.  CLIMB ARM-ELBOW TO BACK. Yang steps back into right hugul jase, and performs right aniso pakuro soo do maki to the outside of Um's right wrist. This quickly flows into a wrist control, and Yang steps forward into left kima jase, striking just above Um's right elbow with soo do and pushing down on the elbow in a manner exactly analagous to ikkyou. Yang then disengages from the wrist and uses the right arm to perform a dropping pal koop kong kyuk on Um's spine.

22.  WRIST GRAB-SPINNING KNEE SMASH. Yang steps forward to perform left chungul right tro aniso-pakuro, as in #10. He then steps through with the right foot, bringing Um's trapped wrist (think sankyou) overhead.  He then turns to his left to deliver left yup cha ki to the side of Um's right knee, simultaneous with left cap kwon kong kyuk to Um's face.

23.  SPINNING ELBOW TRAP. Yang blends with Um's attack, moving forward into left kima jase as he traps Um's arm above the elbow with his right hand, and simultaneously traps Um's attacking forearm in the crook of the elbow. In a smooth motion continuous with the first action, and without losing momentum, Yang pivots to the right, stepping forward into left chungul as he uses Um's own inertia to throw him forward. Ideally, Um should perform a forward breakfall at this point.

24.  GROIN-FACE KNIFE HANDS. Begins like #7, except Yang strikes Um with a fist to the face as he blocks with left soo do maki. Yang follows up immediately with left kwan soo kong kyuk to the groin or hypogastrium, and then strikes at the philtrum with soo do.

25.  ELBOW-KNEE. Yang steps forward into left chungul while performing left aniso-pakuro soo do maki to the inside of Um's right wrist. Simultaneoulsy, he executes right tro pal koop kong kyuk to the side of Um's head. The right arm continues its leftward arc past the head, then reverses, so that Yang grasps the back of Um's head from Um's right. The arm continues its new rightward arc and pulls Um's face into a right tro moo roop ki.

26.  ELBOW-OVER SHOULDER. Yang steps back into left hugul jase, performing left aniso-pakuro soo do maki to the inside of Um's right wrist and then trapping it. He swings Um's arm down and changes grips, grasping Um's wrist in the right hand. Continuing the arc, Yang brings Um's arm overhead as he pivots so that his back is to Um and takes up kima jase. He then breaks Um's arm over his shoulder as he delivers left back pal koop to Um's solar plexus.

27.  EAGLE STRIKE-KNEE. Yang steps back into left hugul, performing left aniso-pakuro soo do maki to the inside of Um's right wrist. He then pivots into left chungul to perform right tro yuk soo do to the side of Um's head. Bringing his left hand up from soo do maki, he grasps Um behind the head and brings his face down into right tro moo roop ki.

28.  WRIST THROW. In a movement exactly analagous to kurikaeshi, Yang steps back into left kima jase as he performs left soo do maki to the outside of Um's wrist and then traps it. Turning the wrist and Um's arm into supination, Yang steps back into right kima jase and brings his right hand up to cover Um's hand and throw him.

29.  GROIN-KNIFE HAND SWEEP. Yang steps forward into right sang dan kong kyuk from left choongul, and then performs a rising left tro yuk soo do to Um's groin. Shifting to a low right kima jase, Yang sweeps Um's left knee with his right hand, pulling down on Um's arm to throw him back.

30.  BACK BREAKING DROP. Yang steps forward into right sang dan kong kyuk from left chungul, and then executes right tro yuk soo do to the left side of Um's head. Yang maneuvers Um's right arm behind his own head, trapping it with the right hand that just performed yuk soo do. Yang draws back his left leg into a right kneeling stance, dropping Um onto his bent right knee to break his back. Yang rises, and then drops into a left kneeling stance to dispatch Um with a kneeling right tro kong kyuk to the solar plexus.
